…..After exploring and realizing the ecological importance of Rajakamangalam Thurai we started our onward journey to accomplish our mission. We proceeded on SH 179, crossed Eathamozhi police station and taken Eathamozhi-Puthalam road. In the meantime, we decided to see the Sanguthurai Beach on our way. You have to take a right turn near Melakrishnanputhur India One ATM and at a distance of 1 KM, you will reach an awesome beach which is near to Nagercoil at a distance of 10 KM. The pathway between the Melakrishnanputhur India One ATM to Sanguthurai Beach has been filled with full of shades formed by coconut canopy. This place is easily accessible from Nagercoil by town buses and auto.
From Watchtower |
How Sanguthurai beach differs from other beach is the name Sangu (conch shell). As the name denotes, initially you will be welcomed at the entrance by man-made conch shell statue and a big giant sculptured conch shell at the beach. The major attraction in the beach would be watchtower where you can grasp the nature of the long shot view of the blue sea on one side and the green vegetation of coconut groves. The other attraction in the beach would be pine trees near the watchtower, stone benches for visitors and good roads were laid by the Panchayat. There is two nursery in between Melakrishnanputhur India One ATM to Sanguthurai Beach, you can buy coconut and other saplings here. The parasailing facility had been added to this beach in recent days. One of the clean and calm beaches especially apt for family and children. Police patrolling will be available on crowded days.

From Manakudy New Bridge |
The Manakudy has a lot of wetland ecosystem, when you hear about mangrove forest in Tamilnadu, Pichavaram will hit your mind but you can experience the mangrove forest on the banks of Pazhayar river in Manakudy. This is the hidden fact in Manakudy. The mangrove forest of Manakudy provides the shelter for large aquatic species and for the purpose of Birdwatching; watchtower has been set by the forest department of Tamilnadu.
From Manakudy New Bridge |
After admiring the beauty of Manakudy bridge we moved to reach Vattakottai as the time is nearing to dawn, So we have cautioned on time. You have to take right in the Manakudy-Kanyakumari Road and at a distance of 3 Km you have to cross the huge lake “Vaal Kulam”. At the junction of Vaal Kulam, you have to take the right turn and crossing Kovalam village and sunset viewpoint you will reach the roundabout in Kanyakumari at a distance of 4 Km. Then you have to take the first exit in that roundabout and after proceeding at a distance of 1 Km near TNSTC Depot auto stand you have to take slight right in the Anjugramam Road. Further continuing in the Anjugramam Road at a distance of 4 Km you have to take the right turn and further road leads you directly to the Fort. Vattakottai |
Vattakottai Fort is a protected property of Archeological Department constructed in the 18th century by Captain “Eustachius De Lannoy” for the purpose of coastal defence. Due to over popularity and heritage of Kanyakumari, Vattakottai Fort has been erased in the minds of Tourist and travellers. At a distance of 6 km from Kanyakumari, you can experience an historical feel in Vattakottai Fort.
Pool inside Vattakottai Fort |
The entry timing for the fort is from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. From my point of view try to go in the morning before 10.00 am and in the evening after 3.00 pm as the sun rays will be minimum. I’m not sure about the entry ticket they didn’t charge me on my visit. From outside it looks so simple but when you are entering, you will see a big pool surrounded by man-made grasslands. These grasslands add more flavour to the major attraction inside the fort. Pathways were provided to all direction of the fort for the visitors

Top of Vattakottai Fort from seaside view |
To experience the real nature you have to climb to the top of the fort(just a few steps) where you can see blue sea, sand dunes, coconut trees alongside the sea and long shot view of the windmill. A single tree on the top of the fort will be more beautiful once viewed from the lens of a photographer, the reason when your focusing, shades of colours blue and green will applause the nature of Vattokotai Fort. Vattakottai Fort will be an apt place for joint family get-together, the reason will be where you will be occupied by a group of 10 to 15 people, cooked food taken from home in lunch carrier, children's find a lot of space to play, less crowded and finally a nap after having food by elder ones in the fort premises. Why I have mentioned this point because during my visit I witnessed a family having a gala time in Vattakottai Fort.
As planned we were in Kanyakumari to enjoy the sunset in the dawn. Lots of crowded have gathered in the Thirveni Sangamam. You can also enjoy the sunset in viewpoint were the tourism board had laid so many stone benches. With the sunset in Kanyakumari officially.
The main aim of this travelogue is to explore the lesser known beaches through the entire course of the journey to Vattakottai Fort. And also to change the perspective of the people to visit the lesser known beaches which are in and around Kanyakumari.
